How do I sign up for racing?

First you need to apply for a PHRF Rating certificate, then you need to pay the racing fee. We can help you with both of those items. We also offer 'One night of free racing' to try it out. Be sure to come to sign up night or the skippers' meeting at JYC.

Can I receive notifications about Thursday Night Racing?

Yes you can! Simply sign up for our fleet email list. Notifications about postponements, cancellations, and events are sent via email to the list. Skippers and crew are encouraged to join the list.


Are there any meetings I can attend to learn more or ask questions?

Each year there is a skippers' meeting for Thursday night racing and both weekend regattas. Dates are posted on the website upcoming events sections.

What if I want to sign up after the season has started?

Not a problem. Contact the the RC by selecting the 'Ask the RC' option from the 'Contact the RC' menu towards the top of this page. A member of the Regatta Committee will contact you to get you started and answer any questions you have.

Where can I find the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions?

Both documents are available on this site for viewing or download. Go to the 'Thursday Series' menu at the top of this page and select the document you want. Printed copies are available from any member of the Regatta Committee

What is the best way for new crew to find a boat to race on ?

Any member of the race committee will help you find a ride. Feel free to come to the Jubilee Yacht Club dock any Thursday night by 5 PM. There is always a skipper who could use an extra hand. Just introduce yourself and we should be able to find you a ride. after racing and socialize with other racers before the awards. There are always skippers looking for crew before heading out to race on Thursdays. Crew is in high demand. Boat owners are constantly looking for help. Generally if you are enthusiastic, can work well on a team and are willing to listen you will be welcome on any boat with an opening.

Where and when do Thursday night races start?

First Gun is at 1810. Races usually start at G13 or G15 off of Hospital Point in Salem Sound.


What channel does the Race Committee boat use ?

Regatta Committee is available on Channel 72. Please be courteous to your fellow racers and do not attempt to contact the RC while start signaling is under way. Generally, information about delays, course changes, abandoning is actively transmitted as it becomes available.

How is the course signaled ?

Courses are signaled with placards on a rack mounted in the stern of the boat. Each character corresponds to a mark of the course in the mark table of the sailing Instructions. The T signal flag indicates the course is twice around.

What are the sound signals ?

At 5,4,1,0 minutes of each start sequence the Horn sounds.
The sailing instructions include an explanatory graphic table for start timing, sounds and flags per RRS rule 26.

What are the fleets and sequence of signals?

The start times times are tentative and may be adjusted due to delays, changing weather conditions, recalls, course changes etc.


Where can I find a set of the Racing Rules of Sailing?

Go to www.ussailing.org and download them. Or join US sailing to support our national sailing authority and get a printed rules book in the mail. Another clear and thorough explanation of the Racing Rules is the book, Understanding the Racing Rules... by Dave Perry. It is available from the US Sailing Online Store. You may also find it through Amazon.com or other sources.

What is Mass Bay Sailing Association?

Mass Bay Sailing Association organizes and coordinates racing in Massachusetts Bay. If you join you are eligible for Mass Bay Championship weekend series. See www.massbaysailing.org.
You can find all of the clubs running sanctioned races in Mass Bay, along with times, dates and sailing instructions for weekend racing.

What are some options for weekend racing?

Jubilee Yacht Club hosts three regattas: The Jubilee Regatta, the Phil Small Race, and the Around the Rocks one design regatta.
Almost every other local yacht club hosts at least one annual regatta.
Mass Bay Sailing maintains a full list of handicap racing. Marblehead Racing also organizes one design races every Saturday.

What does it cost to race?

Racing in the Thursday Night Series is very cost effective, especially if you register and pay for both the Spring and Summer series (a total of 20 scheduled races), which includes both the JYC Regatta, and Phil Small Race. Pricing and applicable discounts are published in the individual Notice of Race. Use the links below to view the NORs.
